Tasha thanks for your reply to this article. I think you touched on the most important factor for the safe use of not only infant carriers, but all products; if you don’t use the product properly, there is a risk of serious injury or death. I love soft infant carriers for the back and on the front of the chest, but I don’t advocate the use of many of the sling type carriers because of the very reason this product was recalled. Parents don't associate this type of product with positional asphyxiation and that’s scary! Products that present unreasonable risk of harm to consumers are those that are recalled; most times because of manufacturing defects, but sometimes based on the design of the product; so, babies in slings are at a much greater risk of positional asphyxiation; so I am not a fan. Great blog by the way!

I personally have several Infantino products in my house, and I use them almost daily. I am also terrified of baby slings in general. I use soft structured baby carriers only for my daughter, however, I do understand that any carrier can be dangerous if not used properly.

Comment on Lead is OK in candy….. by tsaylor

Ralph, I appreciate the comments, but the values you are referencing are not the values from my research. This doesn't mean that your data is wrong, because I dont doubt it. However, lets talk about ALLOWABLE limits in "children's candy"....something our children are sure to consume (you think?!), which is 1000ppm. Now, compare that to the maximum allowable limits for lead in substrates in toys = 300ppm, which although will be mouthed, chewed, licked and sucked, will likely not be ingested, making the total lead content available. Which do you think is better for consumers, specifically young children? I'll take my chances with toys. Perhaps, the food industry (I assume that is your industry?) simply has better lobbyists, than the toy industry. Why wait for the FDA to perforrm testing? Why not do it ourselves? I have a few hundred dollars to throw down on lead testing of randomly selected candies; you want in and we can share the reports with everyone? The CPSC is being forced to crack down on our industry and CBP is ramping up to monitor the pants off of our inbound shipments, but what is being done to lower the allowable limits in candy? Anything?! I don't think so...the last I heard, Mexican candy (imported) was being scrutinized, but what about domestic manufacturers?

It is toobad that all of your numbers from the US FDA Total Diet Study Market Basket 1991-3 through 2005-4 report are 10,000 times too high. For isntance, the numbers in FDA table for a plain milk chocolate candy bar show 52 samples with a mean value of 0.024 mg of Lead per Kg. One milligram per Kilogram is one part per million, so 0.024mg/kg is 0.024 ppm, not 240 ppm. One milligram = 1/1000 th of a gram. 1 Kg = 1000 grams. (1/1000)/1000 = 1/1,000,000 = 1ppm. We are indeed better off eating food than eating toys.
